At English Martyrs we view assessment as a very important tool for benchmarking the starting point of a child’s education and to track progress and attainment.

We follow government guidelines and advice when describing pupil progress. We use the following statements:

  • Working at the expected level of attainment for his/her age
  • Working below the expected level of attainment
  • Working above the expected level of attainment

End of Key Stage 2 SAT’s tests:

At the end of KS2 (Year 6) pupils will undertake SATs tests that reflect the curriculum which has been taught. The outcome of the tests will give children a scaled score. Their raw score – the actual number of marks they accrue – will be translated into a scaled score this helps to allow for differences in the difficulty of the tests from year to year so that pupils’ results can be compared accurately. You will be told your child’s raw score, scaled score and whether they have reached the national standard for that subject.

Children will also be matched against performance descriptors’ (in other words what pupils are expected to know and be able to do at the time of testing) when being assessed by their teachers in non-SATs subjects to see if they’ve achieved the expected standard.

Further information relating to KS2 tests can be found on the Department of Education website

When Will Children be assessed:

Alongside continuous teacher assessments termly, there are national assessments as follows:

  • Reception EYFS (Baseline on entry and on exit)
  • The Phonics Screening Check in Year 1
  • Year 4 Multiplication Table Check
  • The end of KS2 SATs in Year 6 (typically the 2nd week in May)

School Assessment Data and Policies:

One of the most valuable ways in which we assess children is through the marking and feedback to children's work. Our approach to marking is formative, regular and consistent and celebrates what children have achieved as well as showing them how they can develop further in their learning.
